This is the next installment in my Top Shelf PJJ tracks series for a year, which you can stream every track directly from Phish Just Jams. As with the previous installments, this is meant to be a list focused solely on the Phish Just Jams tracks from the year in question.
This is my version of the list for 2017. We usually take the top 25% or so of the given PJJ tracks from a given year. With 129 tracks for 2017, I'm invoking my right to exercise the "or so" clause and expand this list from 32 to 40. There is a plethora of tremendous jams from the year that absolutely had to be included. This is a special year and needs to be treated accordingly.
2017 is a year defined by The Bakers Dozen shows at MSG. The unprecedented 13 show run over two plus weeks took the place of a traditional Summer tour, with a few shows prior to the Dozen to accommodate those who couldn't make it to New York. With the band having to plan for 13 shows with no repeats over the run, they were forced to dig into their material a little more as well as dig in to their new jamming approach and the result was stellar. The monster jams started early on and never let up. After another spectacular visit to Dicks they closed out the year with another 4 shows at MSG, making it 17 shows in 2017 in the revered venue.
I'm not suggesting that it is the definitive list and there are a few choices that I could swap out with others depending on the day. I'm not ranking these 1 to 40 but just presenting the list as a whole because really what difference does it make which jam I think is 11th or 8th or 23rd or so on. The purpose of this list is just to provide a Phish Just Jams playlist of the best jams from the year. The list will be presented chronologically and can then be parsed and dissected from there.
